Local Attractions

Dunkeld and surrounding area:

  • Dunkeld Village: A settlement for over 1300 years, its history is closely linked to its fine Cathedral and today is a lovely village which has benefitted from extensive conservation work by the National Trust for Scotland. It has a handsome bridge designed by Thomas Telford (picture above and below, right) dating from the early 19th Century.
  • The Hermitage: On the banks of the River Braan, situated beside the A9 half a mile north of Dunkeld. Scots landowners were among the pioneers of a new style of landscaping in the mid 18th Century using dramatic natural features such as waterfalls (pictured right) and one of Britain's tallest trees - a 64.5m tall Douglas fir.
  • Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Centre: Excellent views of ospreys from observation hides by the loch shore, and CCTV footage direct from the nest. Scottish Wildlife Trust, 2 miles from Dunkeld. Live webcam!
  • The Birnam Institute: Off the A9, this arts/ community centre hosts a wide programme of music, dance, theatre and monthly art exhibitions as well as the Foyer Cafe and Beatrix Potter Exhibition.

Pitlochry & Blair Atholl:

  • The Queen's View: Scotland's finest and most photographed view (pictured right), 6 miles west of Pitlochry on the B8019. Don't forget the forest walks and activities nearby including the Forest Shop and Tea Room.
  • Fish Ladder in Pitlochry: Completed in 1951, the fish ladder allows salmon to travel upstream during the breeding season, and was created as part of the Tummel Dam hydro electric scheme.
  • Pitlochry Festival Theatre: Operating year round, a selection of drama, dance, concerts & opera.
  • Edradour Distillery: Scotland's smallest distillery and its most picturesque, nestling in the hills East of Pitlochry (free tours).
  • Moulin Brewery: Home of Braveheart and Ale of Atholl ales.
  • Blair Castle: Situated by Blair Atholl Village off the A9 north of Pitlochry, a 5 star castle that has been the ancient seat of the Dukes & Earls of Atholl for almost 740 years. Restaurant, gift shop & gardens.
  • Atholl Country Life Museum: A unique collection of information, photographs and artefacts from the area.
  • Atholl Estates Ranger Service: Based in Blair Atholl, the Ranger Service operates throughout the Estate, and assists visitors in their understanding and enjoyment of the area.
  • Atholl Palace Hotel Museum: Open between 10am and 6 every day, it tells the story of the people who built, worked at and visited the Atholl Palace since 1874.
  • Blair Atholl Distillery: One of the oldest working Scottish distilleries, an easy walk from town (tours all year round).
  • The Falls of Bruar: A series of waterfalls on the Bruar Water about 8 miles from Pitlochry - they were immortalised by Burns in his poem The Humble Petition of Bruar Water to the Noble Duke of Atholl.
  • House of Bruar: Major retail outlet featuring "some of Scotland's finest produce, clothing and rural artwork".
  • Craigower: An NTS Maintained beauty spot, with stunning views of Lochs Tummel and Rannoch on a clear day.
  • Linn of Tummel: Woodland area by Loch Tummel, maintained by National Trust for Scotland.

Aberfeldy and surrounding area:

  • Dewar's World of Whisky: Including a tour of Aberfeldy Distillery, go back through the years with whisky including the first ever cinem advert for a drinks product ... in 1898! Follow signs for Aberfeldy.

A Little Further afield:

  • Clan Trail: By Loch Rannoch.
  • Boating & Fishing on Loch Faskally
  • Killiecrankie Visitor Centre: Magnificent wooded gorge where in 1689 a Jacobite Army led by Bonnie Dundee defeated Government forces. Nowadays it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, run by National Trust for Scotland.

Golf:

Dunkeld is surrounded by several outstanding golf courses, such as Dunkeld & Birnam, Blairgowrie, Alyth and Auchterarder. The Visit Dunkeld golfing page lists many more, and of course the world famous Gleneagles resort is not far away.

  • Perthshire Amber Festival: Looking forward to its 5th year this music & arts festival runs in late October/ early November. In 2009 it will be part of the Homecoming Scotland programme to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth.
